St. Catharines Ontario - Negotiations under way for possible Chinese joint ventureA local businessman says a potential joint venture with a Chinese company would create a new St. Catharines manufacturer and possibly dozens of jobs. This week, Roy Rymer joined officials from Deyang Dongjiagang Mechanical and Electrical Co. Ltd. from Deyang, China. Three days of final negotiations in Niagara are planned for a company to be called Panther Wire and Cable Inc. It would be located at 80 Ridley Rd. The firm would make high-quality wire and cable machinery and market its products internationally. "I would expect this company would have around 30 or 40 people when it gets right up to snuff," said Rymer, president of Progressive Machinery Inc. and Niagara Composites Industries Inc., both of St. Catharines. Rymer said Panther would assemble and manufacture parts originally made in China. "Down the road, we'll get more initiative in manufacturing the smaller parts right here in Canada," he said. The types of products would include power and telecommunications cables. Last summer, a Rymer-led delegation that included St. Catharines Mayor Brian McMullan visited China to develop a business relationship with a high-quality wire and cable manufacturer. Out of the many firms visited, Dongjiagang and Progressive reached a tentative agreement in Deyang for a joint venture. It could eventually amount to millions of dollars of machinery produced every year. Rymer hopes to have final details agreed to this week. If all goes well, it will take at least a year to get the company built and operating in St. Catharines, he said. "If this turns out, this could be very big," Rymer said. "And it looks very promising at this point."
